Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Harsha de Silva has called on the mayor of Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) and the Urban Development Authority (UDA) to urgently repair the walking path at Independence Square, warning that its deteriorating condition poses a safety risk to the public.

In a post on X, de Silva said the walking path, built during the tenure of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa about 15 years ago, has become a popular destination for many morning walkers.

“Honestly I have never seen the path in such disrepair. These rocky protrusions are a danger for walkers; mainly for the elderly folk,” he said.

De Silva also noted that soil brought to repair sections of the path had remained unused for months.

Appealing to Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar and the UDA, he urged authorities to address the issue before someone is seriously injured.

“Mayor Vrai and UDA this is for your attention before someone is seriously injured. Thank you,” he said. (Newswire)
