Judicial Service Association writes to President against retirement age extension

The Judicial Service Association of Sri Lanka has formally opposed proposals to extend the constitutionally established retirement age of judges.

In a letter addressed to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the Association stated that the Sri Lanka Judicial Service Association does not agree with the extension of the constitutionally established retirement age of judges including Supreme Court judges.

“At the special General Assembly meeting held on 11 July 2026, through a secret ballot, this decision was unanimously taken and approved,” the association said.

The Association’s stance comes amid growing resistance within the judiciary to constitutional amendments altering retirement ages, a debate that has drawn attention to judicial independence and governance. (Newswire)
