Former Parliamentarian and Democratic Left Front Secretary Vasudeva Nanayakkara has voiced support for extending the service period of senior judges, saying the move would help reduce the backlog of court cases while allowing the country to benefit from their expertise.

In a statement, Nanayakkara said retaining experienced senior judges beyond the current retirement age would allow their judicial knowledge and experience to continue serving the public interest.

He stressed that any decision on extending the service period of superior court judges should be based on the genuine needs of the judiciary.

Nanayakkara’s remarks come amid an ongoing debate over the government’s proposal to increase the retirement age of senior judges. (Newswire)
