Afternoon showers expected in some districts of Sri Lanka today

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Ampara and Monaragala districts after 2.00 pm today (20).

According to the Department of Meteorology, mainly dry weather will prevail over the other areas of the island.

Strong winds of about 40-50 kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of Central hills, the Northern, North-central, Central and North-western provinces and in the Rathnapura, Hambantota and Trincomalee districts.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. 

Meanwhile, a few showers may occur in the sea areas off the coast extending from Negombo to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

Winds will be south-westerly. Wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kalpitiya to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil.

Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaitivu.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Kalpitiya to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be rough at times.
