The Government has officially launched a new digital death certificate system under the Registrar General’s Department’s e-Population Register programme, replacing handwritten death certificates with a computerised platform.
The system was launched on Thursday (23) by Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Chandana Abayarathna.
The digital system will enable faster issuance of death certificates, maintain an updated population database, improve data sharing among government institutions and enhance the security of official records.
Each certificate will include a QR code for instant verification and will be printed on specially secured paper to prevent forgery.
The pilot project has been launched in the Kalutara District, where the first digitally issued death certificate was presented to the Kalutara District Secretary.
The initiative is expected to streamline access to death certificates required for insurance claims, pensions and other public services while supporting the Government’s broader digitalisation programme. (Newswire)
