President Anura Kumara Dissanayake questioned police officials on how they calculate the estimated street value of narcotics seized during anti-drug operations, during the Galle District Special Coordination Committee meeting on Tuesday.
While briefing the President on the progress of the nationwide “Ratama Ekata” anti-drug operation, police officials outlined the quantities and estimated values of various drugs seized in Galle District since the programme began on 30 October 2025.
During the presentation, the President asked officials how the monetary value of the seized drugs was determined.
In response, police explained that the estimates are based on the prevailing street price of narcotics in different areas. Officials noted that the price varies by location, citing heroin as an example, where a packet containing around 70–80 milligrams sells for approximately Rs. 2,000 in the Galle area, while prices differ in other parts of the country, including Colombo.
Police also informed the President that 2,607 drug raids had been carried out in the district, leading to the seizure of around 119 kilograms of narcotics.
Officials further said more than 100 major drug traffickers are currently under asset investigations, with inquiries focusing on how they acquired properties, vehicles and other assets believed to have been purchased using proceeds from the drug trade. (Newswire)
