
Sri Lanka has secured a place on the global stage with the selection of Seneesa Goonewardena, an 18‑year‑old student, to represent the nation at the ShakthiSAT International Mission.
Goonewardena was chosen following a rigorous selection process from among 200 Sri Lankan students currently undergoing specialized training under the national STEM education program.
According to the Ministry of Digital Economy, her achievement marks a milestone in both education and diplomacy, offering Sri Lanka a platform to showcase its young scientific talent in advanced space technology.
The official program will be held from August 22 to 31, 2026, at Gautam Buddha University in India.
During the summit, Goonewardena is scheduled to participate in high‑level engagements alongside the Prime Minister of India and the President of India, underscoring the international significance of the mission.
The Ministry of Digital Economy described the initiative as a “transformative global opportunity,” highlighting its role in fostering innovation and strengthening Sri Lanka’s presence in international scientific collaboration. (Newswire)
