US President Donald Trump says he has cancelled planned strikes against Iran, provided a deal can be reached “rapidly” with Tehran.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the decision was made after Iran and other Middle Eastern countries urged the US to “hold off” on military action to allow negotiations to continue. He said the move was taken in coordination with Israel.
Trump said the proposed agreement would include the “immediate” reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat. He claimed that the “perimeters” of a deal had been agreed, although Iran has not confirmed that an agreement has been reached.
The announcement came amid reports that Washington was considering further military action against Iran. Trump said the US military remained “locked and loaded” but that he had decided to delay the strikes to allow time for a diplomatic solution.
Iran had earlier accused Washington of escalating tensions and warned that countries cooperating with the US could face consequences if conflict expanded across the region.
The US government has also issued a security alert advising Americans in the Middle East to remain vigilant and prepare for possible travel disruptions, including flight cancellations and airspace closures, if tensions escalate. (Newswire)
