Amnesty International has called on the Pakistani authorities to order a prompt, independent and transparent investigation into the reported use of force by security personnel against protesters in Rawalakot, in Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
In a statement, the rights group said the reports emerging from Rawalakot were “consistent with the Pakistani authorities’ long history of unlawful violence against protesters in Jammu and Kashmir.”
Amnesty said an independent investigation was necessary into the security forces’ use of force against demonstrators and stressed that accountability was essential.
The organisation also expressed concern over the ongoing internet and mobile services blackout, warning that the communications restrictions were severely hampering independent verification of the situation on the ground.
Amnesty urged the Pakistani authorities to immediately restore internet and mobile connectivity and allow media organisations and independent observers access to the affected area. (Newswire)
