The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to expedite the drafting of legislation that would allow home detention as an alternative to imprisonment in suitable cases, as part of efforts to address prison overcrowding.
According to the Cabinet decisions, policy approval had previously been granted to introduce legal provisions enabling eligible suspects and convicted persons to be placed under home detention instead of being remanded or imprisoned in appropriate cases.
A draft bill had subsequently been prepared by the Legal Draftsman.
The Cabinet paper states that the draft legislation was reviewed following Cabinet approval granted on June 23, 2025, and that additional provisions have since been identified for inclusion in the bill.
Accordingly, the Cabinet approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Justice and National Integration to instruct the Legal Draftsman to complete the preparation of the bill on an expedited basis by incorporating the additional provisions. (Newswire)
