Sri Lanka has recorded 86,947 dengue cases so far in 2026, according to the latest data issued by the National Dengue Control at midnight on August 3.
Authorities confirmed 62 dengue‑related deaths this year, with a case fatality rate of 0.07%, underscoring the severity of the outbreak.
The epidemic peaked in July with 29,975 cases, followed by June with 21,533. August has already logged 1,598 cases in its first days.
District‑wise, Gampaha (18,464 cases, 21.2%) and Colombo (17,187 cases, 19.8%) remain the hardest hit, together accounting for over 40 percent of the national total. Other high‑burden districts include Kandy (6,082), Matara (5,874), and Kalutara (5,678).
By province, the Western Province alone contributes 52.9% of cases (45,976), underscoring its status as the epicenter of the epidemic. The Southern (13,029) and Central (7,623) provinces follow.
Surveillance also flagged 137 high‑risk MOH areas in Week 30, with an average of 2,027 new cases per day.
Health officials continue to urge vigilance, especially in densely populated urban zones, as the monsoon season sustains breeding conditions for mosquitoes. (Newswire)
