Cabinet approval has been granted for the construction of a new renewable energy training centre under the Ceylon German Technical Training Institute (CGTTI) at an estimated cost of Rs. 398 million.
The proposed centre will be established on a 3.11-hectare land parcel in the Mayurapura Division of the Walawa Zone, owned by the Mahaweli Authority.
The project follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed on February 10, 2025, between the CGTTI and the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA) to address the growing demand for skilled personnel in the renewable energy sector.
The training facility is expected to function as a CGTTI-affiliated branch and will be located near the Kiribbanwewa Floating Solar Power Plant and the SLSEA’s Hambantota Training Centre, providing students with opportunities for practical training.
According to the Government, the centre will form part of a broader renewable energy training hub aimed at producing skilled technical professionals through training in energy efficiency, electrical and mechanical engineering, and renewable energy fields including solar, wind, hydropower and biomass energy.
The proposal to implement the project using domestic funds was presented by Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Harini Amarasuriya and received Cabinet approval. (Newswire)
