The Department of Meteorology says rainy and windy conditions over the southwestern parts of Sri Lanka are expected to intensify from Thursday due to the active southwest monsoon and continue for the next few days.
According to the latest 36-hour forecast, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North Western provinces, as well as the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. Cloudy skies are expected to prevail over these areas.
Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at some locations in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Galle districts.
Showers or thundershowers may also occur at a few places in the Ampara, Batticaloa and Monaragala districts after 2.00 p.m.
Strong winds of 40-50 km/h are expected at times over the North Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North Western provinces.
The Meteorology Department has urged the public to take adequate precautions to minimise damage from localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. (Newswire)
