Dehiwala–Mount Lavinia Municipal Council on Wednesday became the first local authority in Sri Lanka to begin live streaming its General Council meetings, marking a new step towards greater transparency in local government.

The live broadcast commenced at 9:30 a.m. through the Municipal Council’s official Facebook page following the unanimous approval of the proposal by the Council.

The proposal was introduced by Social Justice Party Municipal Councillor Arkam Muneer, whose party secured a single seat after contesting the 2025 Local Government Election as an independent group.

According to the Council, the initiative aims to improve transparency, accountability and public participation by allowing residents to watch council proceedings, including debates, proposals and discussions by elected representatives in real time.

The Social Justice Party thanked the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, ruling National People’s Power (NPP) members, opposition councillors and the entire Council for unanimously supporting the proposal. (Newswire)
