Sri Lanka Police have reminded the public that vehicles displaying ‘L’ (Learner) plates or being driven by learner permit holders are prohibited from entering expressways.
In a public advisory, Police said a learner’s permit is issued solely for the purpose of practising driving and does not authorise a person to drive on expressways. They noted that a valid full driving licence is mandatory for operating a vehicle on an expressway.
Police further clarified that even if a fully licensed driver is accompanying the learner, a vehicle displaying ‘L’ plates cannot be driven on an expressway.
According to the advisory, such vehicles will be denied entry at expressway access points. Those who enter an expressway in violation of the law may face legal action, including fines or prosecution.
Police also warned that insurance claims arising from an accident may be rejected if the vehicle was being operated unlawfully.
