The Court of Appeal has postponed until September 23 the hearing of an appeal filed by former Parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra seeking to overturn her three-year rigorous imprisonment sentence imposed by the Colombo High Court.
The appeal challenges the June 28, 2024 judgment, which found Premachandra guilty over the 2015 abduction, unlawful detention and assault of a young employee from a shop in Dematagoda.
Premachandra has requested the Court of Appeal to set aside both the three-year prison sentence and the Rs. 20,000 fine imposed by the High Court.
The appeal was taken up before a bench comprising Justices P. Kumaran Ratnam and Pradeep Hettiarachchi, who, after considering submissions made by President’s Counsel Shavindra Fernando for the appellant and Deputy Solicitor General Janaka Bandara for the respondent, fixed the hearing for September 23.
