The Government has gazetted the Judicature (Amendment) Bill proposing to increase the number of High Court Judges and raise the retirement age of High Court Judges and other members of the judiciary.
The Bill was gazetted on Friday (Aug. 7), shortly after the publication of the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
According to the Gazette, the Judicature (Amendment) Bill seeks to amend the Judicature Act, No. 2 of 1978.
The proposed amendments will increase the maximum number of High Court Judges from 110 to 120.
The Bill also proposes to raise the retirement age of High Court Judges from 61 to 63 years.
In addition, the retirement age of all other judges and magistrates will be fixed at 62 years, notwithstanding the provisions of the Public and Judicial Officers (Retirement) Ordinance.
The statement of legal effect accompanying the Bill says the amendments are intended to increase the number of High Court Judges and enhance the retirement age of High Court Judges and all other judges, including magistrates.
Both the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution and the Judicature (Amendment) Bill are expected to be presented to Parliament for debate and approval. (Newswire)
