Sri Lanka Police have urged the public to remain vigilant against phishing attacks and online scams after receiving complaints about fraudulent messages impersonating official police notifications on traffic offences and speed limit violations.
In a statement, the Police Media Division said complaints had been received through the Interchange Unit of the Expressway Division regarding fake messages being circulated on social media and other digital platforms.
Police advised the public not to click on suspicious links received via SMS, email, messaging applications or forwarded messages from unknown sources.
The public has also been urged to verify the authenticity of website addresses and the identity of senders before opening or responding to any links.
Police warned people not to disclose personal information, bank account details, one-time passwords (OTPs), PINs or passwords through unverified links or unfamiliar websites.
It is also advised that the public to verify information only through official Sri Lanka Police communication channels and authorised government websites, report suspicious messages and fraudulent websites to the relevant authorities, keep devices and software updated, and exercise caution when receiving messages demanding urgent action, threatening legal consequences or requesting immediate payments.
Police said following these precautions would significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to cybercrime and help safeguard personal and financial information. (Newswire)
