Heavy rainfall in the catchment areas has pushed both the Castlereigh and Maussakele reservoirs to spill level this morning, according to engineers in charge.
Officials reported that the Castlereigh reservoir has risen 1.2 feet above spill level, receiving 25 millimeters of rainfall in the past 24 hours.
The Maussakele reservoir has climbed even higher, reaching 3.4 feet above spill level, with 29 millimeters of rainfall recorded during the same period.
With water levels rising, electricity generation at Canyon, Laxapana, New Laxapana, Polpitiya, and Wimalasurendra reservoirs is being carried out at maximum capacity.
Meanwhile, authorities have cautioned residents living along both sides of the Maskeliya Oya reservoir to remain vigilant, as spill gate openings may be imminent if water levels continue to rise. (Newswire)
