Delhi Capitals and Bengal wicketkeeper-batter Abhishek Porel has been arrested by police in West Bengal in connection with a rape case filed following a complaint by a woman.
Porel was arrested in Hooghly district after the Calcutta High Court had earlier directed police to apprehend him in connection with the case. He has been remanded to three days of police custody, according to PTI.
The case was registered at Mogra Police Station following a complaint in which the woman accused Porel of establishing a physical relationship with her on the promise of marriage. Porel also faces allegations of criminal intimidation and other offences. The allegations have not been proven in court.
On July 14, the Calcutta High Court directed police to continue efforts to apprehend Porel and another accused and seize electronic devices relevant to the investigation.
Porel, 23, represents Bengal in Indian domestic cricket and has played for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.
