The government has not increased the salaries of Members of Parliament, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said today (11).
Responding to a question at the Cabinet decisions briefing, Jayatissa said claims that MPs had received a salary increase were linked to changes in the fuel allowance provided to MPs and other government officials.
He said MPs had not received any salary increase of Rs. 50,000, Rs. 60,000, Rs. 100,000 or any other amount.
According to the minister, MPs and government officials are entitled to a specified quantity of fuel, with the corresponding allowance calculated based on fuel prices.
He said the government had used the fuel price that prevailed on March 1, 2026, as the basis for calculating the allowance, rather than applying subsequent price increases between March and June.
The circular based on that calculation was brought to an end on July 1, after which the allowance is being calculated according to the prevailing market fuel price on the first day of each month.
Jayatissa said the allowance could therefore increase or decrease depending on changes in fuel prices, and the additional amount currently reflected in the payments was due to the higher fuel price rather than an increase in MPs’ salaries. (Newswire)
