Rain expected in some parts of Sri Lanka today

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts today (12).

According to the Department of Meteorology, several spells of showers may occur in the North-western province.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva province and in the Batticaloa, Ampara, and Mullaitivu district after 2.00 pm.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. 

Meanwhile, showers may occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

Winds will be south-westerly. Wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota and from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and Puttalam.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota and from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and Puttalam will be rough at times. The naval and fishing communities who are engaged in fishing and naval activities in the above sea areas are requested to be vigilant in this regard.

The wave height may increase about 2.5 – 3.0 meters in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Pottuvil via Galle and Hambantota. (Newswire)
