Director of the Walana Anti‑Corruption Unit, ASP Rohan Olugala, has defended the recent operation to apprehend underworld figure Kanjipani Imran, describing it as a success despite challenges of operating in a foreign jurisdiction.
Responding to questions, Olugala said that while local officers are familiar with their own surroundings, conducting a sting in another country requires strict adherence to that nation’s laws and careful preparation.
“I will not say it was unsuccessful. Sometimes, to swim, we have to jump into the water. I think it was a successful operation. We jumped into the water,” he stated, underscoring the risks and determination involved in the mission.
Olugala also addressed concerns raised over the treatment of Ishara Sewwandi, the prime suspect in the murder of underworld figure Ganemulla Sanjeewa, who was recently remanded.
Media reports showed her being escorted to prison without handcuffs, carrying a suitcase, prompting questions about double standards compared to politicians who are handcuffed after sentencing.
On this matter, Olugala clarified that Sewwandi was handed over from court to the Prisons Department, and that an internal investigation is underway by prison authorities regarding the incident. (Newswire)
