Sri Lanka Police has instructed all police stations to take legal action against motorists who park or leave vehicles in a manner that obstructs designated bus stops.
Police said vehicles parked at bus stops frequently force buses to stop on the roadway, contributing to traffic congestion and creating safety risks for passengers boarding and alighting.
The issue has become particularly important following the introduction of wheelchair-accessible bus services, with police noting that blocked bus stops could place persons with disabilities and other passengers in dangerous situations.
Under a special Government Gazette notification, vehicles are prohibited from parking within 30 metres of a bus stop and within 15 metres of its exit.
For bus stops equipped with bus bays, parking is prohibited within 15 metres of the bus stop and within 10 metres of its exit.
Police said all police stations have been instructed to take appropriate legal action against drivers violating these rules.
The measures are aimed at allowing public transport buses to stop safely at designated locations, improving passenger safety and reducing unnecessary traffic congestion. (Newswire)
