The National Livestock Development Board (NLDB) has recorded a net profit of Rs. 300 million during the first six months of this year, Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation Minister K.D. Lal Kantha said.

The minister said the financial performance marks a significant achievement for the state-owned institution, which has improved its profitability through increased production and the more effective use of available resources.

The growth has been attributed to the expansion of grass and maize cultivation to support increased milk production, the utilisation of underused resources to generate additional income, value addition and the introduction of new products, as well as the implementation of new projects.

The board’s breeding poultry farms have made the largest contribution to the reported profit, with the Karandagolla, Miriswatta and Mawatta broiler breeding farms making a particularly significant contribution.

The NLDB had also intervened in the poultry market when chicken prices rose sharply, helping maintain prices at stable levels and protect consumers from excessive price increases, according to the ministry.

Minister Lal Kantha said the achievement demonstrates that state institutions can also operate profitably through proper management, effective planning and the commitment of their officers and employees. (Newswire)
