Bellanwila Esala Perahera, A Living Religious and Cultural Heritage

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said that religious and cultural festivals such as the Bellanwila Esala Perahera play a significant role in preserving Sri Lanka’s religious and cultural heritage from generation to generation and keeping it alive for future generations.
The Prime Minister made these remarks while attending the 76th annual Bellanwila Esala Perahera, held yesterday (15) at the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya.
The Prime Minister noted that the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya holds a significant place not only in Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage but also in the preservation of the country’s cultural and artistic heritage. She said that an Esala Perahera is not merely a colourful cultural procession, but a living heritage that brings together religious beliefs, traditional dance, music, craftsmanship and a sense of community.
She further emphasised that preserving such heritage is not merely about protecting the past, but also about creating opportunities for future generations to understand their cultural identity and carry it forward.
Highlighting the importance of cultivating respect for traditions and cultural heritage among children and youth, the Prime Minister stressed the need to incorporate values taught by Buddhism, such as compassion, loving-kindness, non-violence and coexistence, into daily life.
She also stated that it is the responsibility of the Government to provide the necessary support to ensure that the knowledge, skills and traditions of traditional artists are passed on to future generations.
The Prime Minister expressed her sincere appreciation to the Chief Incumbent Thero and the Maha Sangha, the Dayaka Sabha, the organising committee, traditional dancers, drummers and all artists who contributed to the successful organisation of the Bellanwila Esala Perahera.
Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath, who also attended the occasion, said that everyone has a responsibility to strengthen and carry forward the Perahera and promote Sri Lanka’s Buddhist philosophy and culture. He said that the Government is prepared to provide the fullest possible support towards this effort, adding that the Perahera makes a valuable contribution towards promoting religious and national unity and moving forward together as one community.
The Chief Incumbent Thero and members of the Maha Sangha of the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath, other public representatives, government officials and devotees attended the occasion.
