An acting officer-in-charge (OIC) of the Saindamaruthu Police Station and a police constable have been arrested by officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) over an alleged Rs. 20,000 bribe.
The acting OIC had allegedly demanded the money from a suspect who had been arrested on Aug. 14 for possessing 70 milligrams of heroin, in exchange for not reporting the case through a B report and instead submitting the matter to court through a formal charge sheet.
The suspect was due to be produced before court on Aug. 15 and had agreed to pay the money after the case proceedings were completed.
The payment was arranged for Monday (17), but the acting OIC was away from the station on duty at the time the money was to be collected.
A police constable allegedly went to collect the money on the acting OIC’s instructions and was arrested by CIABOC officials while accepting the alleged bribe.
The acting OIC was subsequently arrested based on information uncovered during the investigation.
The two officers, who had recently reported for duty at the Saindamaruthu Police Station, have been taken to the Kalmunai Police Station under the custody of CIABOC officials. (Newswire)
