Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath says Sri Lankans will soon have the freedom to own and use vehicles of their choice, as the government continues to ease restrictions on imports.
Speaking as chief guest at the “Motor Rally 2026” Vehicle Exhibition Parade organized by the Sri Lanka Auto Importers Association (CAIA) on Sunday, the Minister underscored the government’s commitment to creating a nation where citizens can travel conveniently in their own vehicles and attend to daily needs with ease.
Minister Herath recalled that just two years ago, vehicle imports had been completely suspended, leaving no possibility of bringing vehicles into the country.
He noted that the government had managed to restart imports within a short period, and today, the opportunity exists to import any type of vehicle without restriction.
While acknowledging that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has temporarily imposed certain limitations, he stressed that these restrictions are only short‑term and will be lifted.
The Minister pointed out that the ability to resume imports under a restricted system was made possible because the economy had been strengthened.
“With your support we have strengthened the economy and are furthering it. As such, people will be able to use the vehicle of their wish in the near future,” he said.
Minister Herath added that broader reforms are required to create the space for citizens to live happily and travel freely, but assured that the government is committed to making those changes. (Newswire)
