The Department of Meteorology has issued a high wave advisory for sea areas extending from Negombo to Pottuvil via Galle, Matara and Hambantota, warning of increased swell waves and possible near-shore surges.

The advisory, issued at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday (18), will remain in effect until 5:30 p.m. Wednesday (19).

The department said swell waves reaching about 2.5 to 3 metres in height may develop in the affected sea areas.

It warned that near-shore sea areas along the coast from Beruwala to Matara via Galle may experience surges caused by swell waves.

Naval and fishing communities engaged in activities in the affected sea areas have been urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. (Newswire)
