The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) and the Bar Council of Bhutan have held their first bilateral meeting in Thimphu, marking a new step in cooperation between the two legal bodies.
The two associations agreed to strengthen cooperation between their legal professions, with a focus on justice, the rule of law, professional integrity and the independence of the judiciary and legal profession. Their commitments were reflected in a joint statement signed during the visit.
The meeting took place during the first visit by a BASL delegation to Bhutan, during which BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya was also invited to address the High Court of Bhutan.
In his address to the court, Amarasuriya highlighted judicial independence and the relationship between the Bench and the Bar, while identifying legal education, professional development, opportunities for young lawyers, technology and court administration as potential areas for cooperation between the two countries.
The BASL delegation also met Bhutan’s Supreme Court Chief Justice Norbu Tshering and Attorney General Sonam Tashi during the visit. (Newswire)
