Sri Lanka Police is expected to introduce a new uniform early next year, Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala said.

The minister said the proposed change was being made in consultation with police officers and could be introduced by January or February.

“We are attempting to introduce this change by next January or February,” Wijepala said during an appearance on a state television programme.

He said the government’s plans were not limited to changing the appearance of police officers, but also included measures aimed at improving the quality of the service and making it more public-friendly.

Wijepala added that steps were also being taken to increase the salaries of police officers as part of efforts to improve the service. (Newswire)
