The Department of Meteorology has issued a high wave advisory for sea areas extending from Chilaw to Pottuvil via Galle, Matara and Hambantota, valid until 5:30 p.m. Friday (21).

The advisory, issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (20), warns that swell waves of about 2.5 to 3 metres may develop in the affected sea areas. The stated height refers to swell waves and not the height of waves reaching the land.

The department said there is a possibility that near-shore sea areas extending from Beruwala to Matara via Galle may experience surges due to the swell waves.

Naval and fishing communities engaged in activities in the affected sea areas have been advised to remain vigilant. (Newswire)
