The Sri Lanka Public Health Inspectors’ Association has raised serious concerns over alleged irregularities and administrative shortcomings at the Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport Health Office, claiming that previous complaints had not been properly investigated.

In a letter to the Health Ministry Secretary, the association alleged that several incidents involving suspected corruption, misuse of public funds and administrative misconduct had been brought to the authorities’ attention, but that no proper investigations had been conducted.

The association also claimed that senior Public Health Inspector B.H. Weerasekera had been transferred in an arbitrary manner after raising concerns over the alleged irregularities.

It said all public health inspectors across the country would withdraw from airport quarantine-related duties, including dengue patient investigations, from August 20, followed by a nationwide strike on August 21.

The association said further professional trade union action would be decided based on the response from Health Ministry officials, while warning that evidence relating to the alleged irregularities would be submitted to the relevant authorities for legal action.

It also urged authorities to reinstate the officer in his previous post pending a proper investigation. (Newswire)
