The Department of Meteorology has issued a warm weather advisory for the Eastern province and Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Monaragala and Polonnaruwa districts, valid for Aug. 22 (Saturday).
The advisory, issued at 4 p.m. on Aug. 21 (Friday), said the heat index, the temperature felt on the human body, is expected to reach the “Caution” level in some areas during the daytime.
According to the advisory, prolonged exposure and physical activity under such conditions could cause fatigue, while continued activity could result in heat cramps.
The Department of Meteorology said the heat index is calculated using relative humidity and maximum temperature and is not a forecast of the maximum air temperature.
The advisory urged people working outdoors to stay hydrated and take breaks in shaded areas as often as possible. People were also advised to limit strenuous outdoor activities, seek shade and wear lightweight, white or light-coloured clothing. (Newswire)
