Sri Lanka has held a special workshop on using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the legislative drafting process, with the technology proposed to be piloted in drafting legislation governing Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs).

The workshop, themed “Better Tools for Better Lawmaking,” was held at the Legal Draftsman’s Department on Aug. 21 and was jointly organized by the Ministry of Digital Economy and GovTech Sri Lanka.

The session, chaired by Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne, presented a proposed roadmap for integrating AI into the country’s legislative drafting process.

As an initial step, officials have proposed using AI technology in work related to the proposed Virtual Asset Service Providers Bill.

The workshop also demonstrated the practical use of AI-assisted tools for legislative drafting, validation and producing documents in Sinhala, Tamil and English.

Discussions also focused on data readiness, safeguards and the next steps required to move forward with the pilot project.

Senior Presidential Adviser on Digital Economy and GovTech Sri Lanka Chairman Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, Digital Economy Ministry Secretary Waruna Sri Dhanapala, Legal Draftsman Dilrukshi Samaraweera and other senior officials participated in the discussions. (Newswire)
