A Panama-flagged cargo ship carrying 24 crew members has sunk in the Bay of Bengal, triggering a search and rescue operation for those still missing.

The MV Ocean Winner sank on Saturday around 240 nautical miles off the Paradip coast in India’s Odisha state after communication with the vessel was lost.

Two crew members were rescued from separate life rafts, while efforts are continuing to locate the remaining 22 people on board.

The vessel was carrying 20 Chinese nationals, three Myanmar nationals and one Bangladeshi.

The Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy have deployed vessels for the search and rescue operation, while other ships in the area have also been alerted to assist.

The Ocean Winner had departed Paradip on August 20 and was heading to Singapore carrying iron ore when the incident occurred.

The cause of the sinking has not yet been established. (Newswire)
