The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has cautioned that the ongoing El Niño weather conditions could drive electricity demand higher while reducing generation capacity as water resources dry up.
PUCSL Chairman K. P. L. Chandralal said that in such circumstances, the country faces the risk of a power shortage.
He made these remarks during today’s media briefing on the newly announced feed‑in tariffs for electricity generated from renewable energy sources.
Chandralal noted that an estimated 450‑megawatt reduction in battery storage systems could occur as a result of the prevailing conditions, making it more difficult to ensure an uninterrupted power supply.
The Commission stressed the need to prepare for these challenges by expanding renewable energy integration and maintaining sufficient storage capacity to ensure grid stability and a reliable electricity supply. (Newswire)
