The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has arrested a police inspector and a police constable over an alleged demand and acceptance of a Rs. 20,000 bribe.

The suspects were identified as Police Inspector Balasubramaniam Pragalathan and Police Constable Hasan Maulana Athuhar, both attached to the Sainthamaruthu Police Station.

According to CIABOC, the officers allegedly sought the money in connection with a suspect arrested for possessing ice, a form of methamphetamine.

The bribe was allegedly demanded in exchange for not reporting the full quantity of ice allegedly in the suspect’s possession to court under Section 54 of the Poisons, Opium and Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, and instead reporting only 70 milligrams of heroin, with the intention of securing a lesser punishment.

The money was allegedly obtained through the second suspect on the instructions of the first suspect, CIABOC said.

The police inspector was arrested at about 4:05 p.m. at the Periya Nilaveli Police Station, while the police constable was arrested at about 2:40 p.m. in front of Zahira College in Kalmunai Kudy on Aug. 17. (Newswire)
