Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage continued his outstanding season by winning the men’s javelin throw at the Zurich Diamond League in Switzerland with a massive 92.07-metre effort.
The 23-year-old produced the winning throw on his sixth and final attempt at the Weltklasse Zürich meeting on Thursday, August 27. His effort fell just 21 centimetres short of the Zurich meeting record of 92.28m.
Tharanga had already taken control of the competition with throws of 88.23m and 89.90m before producing the 92.07m effort in the final round.
Grenada’s Anderson Peters finished second with a season-best 86.93m, while Poland’s Dawid Wegner took third place with 85.16m.
The victory was Tharanga’s fourth Diamond League win of the season. He previously won in Doha, Rome and Lausanne, while finishing second in Rabat. He ends the qualifying series at the top of the Diamond League standings with 39 points.
The 92.07m throw is Tharanga’s second-best career performance, behind his personal best of 92.62m recorded at the Rome Diamond League earlier this year.
Tharanga will next head to the season-ending Diamond League Final in Brussels as the leading qualifier in the men’s javelin. (Newswire)
