President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has handed over 165 title deeds to beneficiaries of Phase III of the Indian Housing Project, the Indian High Commission in Colombo said.
The title deeds were presented on August 28 in the presence of Acting Indian High Commissioner Maitrey Kulkarni during a ceremony in Poonagala, Badulla, where the “Navodayapuram” housing project was also inaugurated.
Navodayapuram, constructed by the Sri Lankan government, provides new homes for 50 families affected by disasters.
The Indian High Commission said Phase III of the Indian Housing Project has provided 4,000 houses for families in Sri Lanka’s plantation community. The final set of houses under the phase was inaugurated in April 2026 by Indian Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan.
The overall Indian Housing Project represents a commitment of around INR 18.35 billion in grant assistance from the Indian government.
Under the first two phases, 46,000 houses were constructed in Sri Lanka’s Northern and Eastern provinces.
Phase IV, announced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2017, envisages another 10,000 houses for the plantation community. Construction of the first 1,300 units is nearing completion, according to the High Commission.
India’s overall development cooperation partnership with Sri Lanka stands at more than USD 7.5 billion, including around USD 880 million in grant assistance, covering projects across all 25 districts. (Newswire)
