A section of a Church Street inside the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Galle Fort has been completely closed following a collapse linked to an underground drainage system.
Residents and business owners say the collapse occurred several weeks ago and has continued to cause difficulties for those living and operating businesses in the area.
Concerns have increased as Sri Lanka’s upcoming tourist season approaches, with the road closure also inconveniencing foreign tourists visiting the historic Galle Fort.
Residents say the area around the collapse has become particularly dangerous during the prevailing rainy weather.
According to residents, several relevant state institutions have been informed of the situation. They said the Galle Municipal Council has responded and is currently carrying out work to clear an underground drain connected to the affected drainage system.
Residents and business owners have urged authorities to urgently repair the damaged section and reopen the road before the upcoming tourist season.
They warned that continued delays could cause further difficulties for businesses, residents and visitors to one of Sri Lanka’s key tourist attractions. (Newswire)
