The death toll from devastating flash floods in Nepal has risen to at least 734, with nearly 2,500 people still missing as rescue operations continued for a fifth day on Sunday (August 30).
Chinese authorities have separately confirmed 16 deaths and 546 people missing in Tibet’s Gyirong County, taking the combined confirmed toll from the disaster to at least 750 dead and more than 3,000 missing.
Rescue teams in Nepal and China are battling deep mud, rising rivers and the threat of further flooding as they search for thousands of people still unaccounted for after a massive wall of water and debris swept through communities along the Himalayan border.
Nepal has also begun burying unidentified victims after collecting DNA samples and documenting the bodies so they can later be identified and returned to their families for traditional funeral rites. (Newswire)
