Vavuniya recorded Sri Lanka’s highest maximum temperature on Monday (Aug. 31), reaching 38.8 degrees Celsius, according to data released by the Department of Meteorology.
Several other areas, particularly in the North, North Central and Eastern regions, also recorded high temperatures.
Polonnaruwa recorded a maximum temperature of 38.4°C, followed by Trincomalee at 38.1°C, Monaragala at 37.1°C and Anuradhapura at 37.0°C.
Mullaitivu recorded 36.7°C, while Maha Illuppallama recorded 36.1°C and Mattala 35.6°C.
Meanwhile, temperatures were relatively lower in parts of the Western and Southern regions. Colombo recorded a maximum of 31.1°C, Katunayake 31.2°C and Galle 29.6°C.
Nuwara Eliya recorded the lowest maximum temperature among the locations shown in the Meteorology Department data, at 20.8°C.
Other maximum temperatures included Jaffna at 33.9°C, Batticaloa at 34.8°C, Pottuvil at 34.1°C, Kurunegala at 33.3°C and Hambantota at 32.0°C. (Newswire)
