A young girl has been pulled alive from the rubble in Nepal, providing a rare moment of hope days after catastrophic floods and mudslides devastated parts of the country.

Video verified by Newswire shows rescue workers pulling the girl from debris before giving her water and medical attention. She was later seen receiving food at a shelter for people displaced by the disaster.

The rescue came as emergency teams continued searching through mud and debris for thousands of people still missing following the disaster, which struck Nepal and neighbouring Tibet on Wednesday.

Nepal’s disaster authority said 781 people had died and 2,502 remained missing as of Sunday. Another 16 people have been confirmed dead and 546 remain missing on the Tibetan side of the border, taking the combined toll to nearly 800 dead and more than 3,000 missing.

The disaster was triggered after a glacier collapse unleashed a torrent of ice, rock, mud and debris through Himalayan valleys and rivers, destroying homes, roads and infrastructure. More than 90,000 people are estimated to have been affected.

The scale of the tragedy has also left families facing the difficult task of identifying recovered bodies.

In Chitwan, relatives of missing people have gathered at temporary holding centres and are being shown images of recovered victims in an effort to identify their loved ones. Authorities have also collected DNA samples and other identifying information from bodies that can no longer be visually identified.

Around 10,000 Nepali troops have been deployed alongside specialist teams from India and China as rescue operations continue, including efforts to reach hundreds of people feared trapped inside tunnels at flood-hit hydropower projects. (Newswire)
