Venerable Battaramulle Seelarathana Thera, leader of the Janasetha Front, was assaulted this morning in the Weeragula area, it was reported.
According to the Mawbima newspaper, the assailant fled the scene following the attack.
At the time, the Thera was at a temple in Warana, Attanagalla, where funeral arrangements of a devotee were being discussed.
Reports indicate that arguments arose during the discussion, leading to the assault.
The monk is currently receiving treatment at Gampaha Hospital.
The Weeragula Police have launched an investigation into the incident. (Newswire)
