Showers and thunderstorms are likely across several parts of Sri Lanka on Saturday, with rainfall exceeding 75 millimeters possible in some areas, the Department of Meteorology said.
Showers or thunderstorms may develop after 2 p.m. at several locations in the Uva, Central and Eastern provinces, as well as the Polonnaruwa and Mullaittivu districts.
Several spells of showers are also expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and the Galle and Matara districts.
The public has been advised to take precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, the sun will be directly overhead near Moratuwa, Kesbewa, Handapangoda, Idalgashinna, Yudhaganawa, Kotiyagala and Panama at about 12:08 p.m. Saturday. The sun is directly over Sri Lankan latitudes from Aug. 28 through Sept. 7 during its apparent southward movement.
Showers are possible at a few locations in sea areas from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle. Showers or thunderstorms may occur at several locations in waters from Mullaittivu to Pottuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa during the evening or night.
Southwesterly winds are forecast at 30 to 40 kilometers per hour. Wind speeds may increase to 50 to 60 kph at times in waters from Hambantota to Pottuvil and from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar. (Newswire)
