The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber advisory for severe lightning for the Eastern and Uva provinces and the Polonnaruwa and Mullaitivu districts.
The advisory, issued at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 6, is valid until 11:30 p.m.
The department said thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely at several locations in the affected areas, while temporary localized strong winds may also occur during thunderstorms.
People have been urged to take precautions, including seeking shelter indoors, avoiding open areas and water bodies, staying away from wired telephones and connected electrical appliances during thunderstorms, and avoiding open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats.
The public has also been advised to be cautious of fallen trees and power lines. (Newswire)
