An Egyptian court has sentenced television presenter Sarah Khalifa and 11 others to death by hanging after convicting them on drug-related charges, according to Egyptian state media.
The defendants were found guilty of being part of a criminal network that imported raw materials used to manufacture narcotics for sale. Prosecutors also accused members of the group of possessing illegal firearms and ammunition.
Khalifa, 39, is known for presenting the television programme “Mission Impossible,” which focused on crime-related issues. She has denied the allegations against her.
Authorities told the court that more than 750 kilograms of narcotics and raw materials intended for drug production had been seized during the investigation.
The prosecution presented testimony from 20 witnesses as well as electronic evidence, including conversations and video footage, according to state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper.
The death sentences were initially announced last month but were confirmed after the court received the required religious opinion from Egypt’s grand mufti. Under Egyptian law, courts must seek the grand mufti’s opinion before confirming a death sentence.
During a previous court appearance, Khalifa reportedly denied any involvement with the drugs, saying she had not seen them until she was photographed alongside them at anti-narcotics authority offices.
The verdict can be appealed.
According to Amnesty International, Egyptian courts handed down 492 death sentences in 2025, while 23 executions were recorded during the year. (Newswire)
