Sri Lanka’s younger generation is “very happy” that those accused of corruption are being brought to justice, Minister Vijitha Herath said on Tuesday.
Herath made the remarks at the post-Cabinet media briefing in response to questions from journalists over a statement issued by the United National Party (UNP) regarding the arrest of MP Namal Rajapaksa.
The UNP had said that no modern, civilized society would approve of depriving an individual of democratic rights, adding that the Gen Z generation, in particular, viewed such actions with strong disapproval.
Rejecting the UNP’s assertion, Herath said Gen Z had been among those demanding action against corruption.
“Gen Z is very happy that the corrupt are being punished. That is what they demanded. Why did they take part in the Aragalaya? They gathered at Galle Face demanding that the thieves and the corrupt who destroyed the country be driven out,” Herath said.
“Gen Z is happiest when those responsible for corruption are penalized. What frustrated them was the delay in taking action. Therefore, our younger generation is very happy today,” he added. (Newswire)
