The wife of a police officer who has remained bedridden for nearly three years following an accident has appealed to the Inspector General of Police to intervene over delays in granting his pension, accident compensation and other benefits.
In a social media appeal, the woman said her husband was travelling to the Police Training College in Borella to attend a sergeant training course when he was involved in an accident nearly three years ago.
She said the officer has since been left with serious health complications and remains unable to carry out basic activities independently.
According to the appeal, he has not regained proper awareness, receives food through a feeding tube and also has a tube inserted in his neck to assist with breathing.
His wife said she has become his full-time caregiver and is unable to seek employment as he cannot be left unattended.
She said the family continues to live in rented accommodation and has been struggling to meet the cost of treatment, medication and daily care without a regular income.
According to her, the family received the officer’s salary for three months following the accident and a further six months after accident leave was approved.
She claimed that documents required to obtain his pension and accident compensation had been submitted some time ago, but the process had yet to be completed.
The woman further claimed that the pension process had been halted due to an SIU investigation, while files relating to accident compensation had been referred back and forth due to issues involving the medical board.
She appealed to the Inspector General of Police to consider the officer’s condition and the difficulties faced by the family and to expedite the payment of his pension, accident compensation and any other benefits to which he is entitled.
“We are not asking for sympathy. We are asking for the rights he is entitled to and justice for our family,” she said in the appeal.
She also urged the public to share the message in an effort to bring the matter to the attention of the relevant authorities. (Newswire)
